Life's Unanswered Questions

When we were hired for Del Sol I really thought we would have a great summer experience. We were hoping to be managers and to be able to really learn the intricacies of how a business is run, of inventory management, and how an international company functions. We were a little let down when we found out we didn’t receive the management job due to a change of plan from the owner. After many missed deadlines of having the store finished we are sitting here on a completely remote island without a movie theatre, a decent grocery store, no other forms of entertainment, and no way to verbally communicate with the “mothership.’
Finally, earlier this week we were given a cell phone so that we can keep in touch with the others on the island and give a way for Del Sol HQ to call us. Yesterday we were finally able to talk to someone at Del Sol and tell them our dire situation. We discussed our options about leaving this island and maybe becoming managers somewhere else. They said it is a definite possibility and that we are good candidates, which I think means “we think we could use you as a manager but will let you know in the future.” The sad part about this whole Del Sol thing is that Brynn and I are both graduates and could probably find a decent paying job back in the US and could eventually get a home and start our lives but are deciding instead to postpone growing up and to maybe someday get a good learning experience from this internship thing. At least we will get to help put a new store together this next week which will be fun and we also get to see this store get off the ground. Nobody that we will be working with knows much about Del Sol so it should be good for everyone to have to learn together. We did get to help a little with the interviews for the future employees, which was fun. It looks like we will have a good group of workers. We will keep you updated with what we decide to do whether it be to go somewhere else and try this process again or to just come home. If you have any insight on what you think we should do feel at ease to post suggestions and comments and I promise to take them into consideration.

It seems to me that Del Sol has really screwed you guys over. I think that you should let them know about how bad they screwed you over and see if they will rectify the situation. If they can't, don't, or are wavering on it - which seems to be their forte - start making demands or just quit. For as much of your lives as the company has taken up, you probably could have earned enough money to take a few weeks off and visit the islands. Anyway, just my point of view. What do I know, I'm an unemployed college graduate.

I'd say if you hate the island and they keep delaying that this would probably be a good time to bail or give them an ultimatum to send you somewhere else.

I'd say stick it out a little longer. Even though you guys aren't managers, you are in a situation to help out with the opening of a new store. I'm sure you can learn a lot and gain a lot of experience. It's been my experience that if you work hard and do more than you are asked to, you learn some and end up being promoted. If you're plain bored, cut your losses and find real jobs back here.

Coincidently, Ryan is looking for a maid and butler if you two are interested.

Thanks for the good feedback. Jon, instead of writing the hugest comment ever decided to email me and also gave some good insight. I think Brynn and I need to be more firm and demanding of what we want and not let ourselves be pushed around by the big guys. If we were to transfer somewhere else, we would end up being gone until Dec. or Jan. and I would hope that some of you would save up to come visit us.

Nate, be firm but professional, if they are still paying you hang in there and don't make any rash decisions. Dad
