Scooter Day

As we traveled the island on our Scooter we really noticed the potential this island doesn’t have. About a year and a half ago there was a really nice resort here that went bankrupt and instead of selling the land it has stayed and locals have ripped it apart, broken every window, torn up all the flooring, thrown garbage around and have turned it into a complete dump. We found some brochures of what the place used to look like and wow has it changed. The pool is full of murky water, the trees have overgrown everything, and now it feels almost haunted. We walked around for a while and got some pictures and then quickly left not wanting to stay in this disaster area.
We made it to the famous lighthouse of Grand Turk where a wedding was taking place so we skirted around the edges of the grounds looking at the tiny quarters of the lighthouse keeper, took a picture of the newly painted lighthouse that is no longer in use and then hopped back on the scoot and left, a little disappointed at how not-remarkable the place was.
Second to the old resort, I think the most fascinating thing about this island is that they say that on one side (the side nearest us) is the Caribbean Sea and on the other is the Atlantic. Just calling them different things is one thing but the differences were huge. On the Atlantic side the waves were large and the ocean looked choppy, dark, cold, more fierce and there was no beach. On the other side it is calm, quiet, and the beach extends down the whole island. One of the divers from the island said that the animal life on each side of the island is also very different. I don’t completely understand the why’s of it all but it is interesting nonetheless.
In the end, our Scooter Day was a success. We had a good time exploring the island and we were able to get some groceries without suffering from the usual heat stroke that we get every time we have to go into town on foot. The pictures above are of the destroyed hotel and of the lighthouse.

Not sure but I think we heard that most properties on the beach sell for around 1 million but inland the houses are much more reasonable. I will try to find out more.
